The next iPhone will get a ‘world facing’ 3D camera

Rumors from Apple HQ say their new phones will include a 3D camera that combines lasers, sensors, and groundbreaking software to measure the distance between objects in photos. That means in the future, when you snap your iced coffee from above, it’ll be coded with data that knows exactly what size your drink is (aka XL on a Monday).

But why is Apple adding the tech? Apparently, like most everything in life, it’s for the ‘gram. According to Fast Company, the upgrade will make it easier to put augmented reality (and even holograms!) on social media, and have them look more realistic than ever. So next time you want to make an ex jealous, you might be able to fake a video where you’re having breakfast with Justin Timberlake… when really, you’re just self-quarantining in your kitchen with a bowl of granola.

Apple won’t be the first to add a rear-facing depth camera to it phones. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, as well as other Android phones, already have them. But Apple may find some new and novel ways to leverage the technology for new user experiences. And it will likely be a bit more showy in the way it brands and markets those experiences, if history is a guide.
