Flipboard: The modern magazine to keep you on track
It’s amazing how information is accessible at our fingertips. Can you imagine 20 years ago… we were all tied to TV screens with conglomerate-manipulated information. AKA Fake news, What's great is, just as journalism has evolved, so has citizen journalism. Everyone has a voice through social media, I mean the BLM wasn’t even a term a century ago, but look at the awareness level we are now.
But with news and too much news, sometimes it does feel overwhelming. There are SO MANY news outlets out there and you just don’t know which ones are reliable, but that doesn't mean you should ignore them all. It’s important to keep your self informed in order to make your own critical judgement (not just what we see on our IGs. Is it just me of does everyone suddenly think they are politicians and doctors). That’s a big reason why I use a news manager like Flipboard, I find it extremely appealing and efficient to skim through the global headlines and understand all the viewpoints that have been published.
Flipboard curates a selection of news from different media outlets that are within your uniquely designed interest. To look through these news, you would “flip” through headlines with excerpts from the article. “It’s a magazine prescribed just for you to help shape your understanding of the world”-- that’s how Flipboard’s CEO, Mike McCue, puts it.
To be honest with you, I originally downloaded it because it looked really cool. I mean... come on, every other news site just has you scrolling through piles of unattractive text that is clickbait, but Flipboard lets you engage with the article and pictures just as you would on Tinder (yep, Tinder the dating app). You start with the pictures and study the description, if it’s something within your lane you tap to open up the full article but if it’s not, swipe up. Flipboard has categories from fashion design to STEM or even the latest hashtags, you can mix business with pleasure. Pro Tip: It looks even better on the iPad.
Other features:
Flipboard has a curated “for you” section where they recommend articles based on your interests. Flipboard learns your interest from your activities, what you choose to read, what is liked, and what you’ve shared. You also have the option to “less like this” which literally does what it says, it helps you fine-tune the order you receive your articles. Flipboard recommends stories from the top publishers in the field, just to name a few: The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Elle, and Runner’s World. They just introduced a new Reader View button that filters out unwanted pop-ups or Ads, just a simpler mode of viewing the article than its web graphics.
Using Flipboard is an experience, it makes digesting the new much easier and less like a chore. Flipboard is available on web browsers, App store, Google Play store and Windows store.
