Social media app Hive—like Instagram with nostalgic MySpace elements—is seeing literal overnight success, with 130,000 new users in a few hours and a #1 spot in the app store. Why the major swarm? Founder Kassandra Pop sponsored some influencer posts on rival app TikTok. So many new users rushed to join the app the servers crashed. Now that’s gotta sting.
Just when I thought I’ve has enough social media in between IG, Clubhouse and Twitter, I learned of Hive. Although Hive isn’t new (the platform started in 2019), it only soared in popularity overnight, with over 130,000 new members in just a few hours. It’s now the number one social media app on Apple’s App Store, and the number two most-downloaded app overall.
Hive’s features combine concepts we love from Instagram and Twitter with a hint of nostalgia from Myspace, including photo and video posts, status updates and reposting content, and even a personalized music section on your profile. The app also has a chronological home feed and lets users monetize from their account, allowing you to post the links you want to promote in your caption.
Kassandra told Teen Vogue that her love for coding started back in high school. “In my senior year of high school, I was obsessed with Criminal Minds’ Penelope Garcia. She’s a hacker and coder who’s super bubbly and has great fashion sense. Her personality is similar to mine and I realized I don't have to be this boring computer science person to do what she does,” she shares. “Although my major wasn’t in computer science, I actually ended up teaching myself how to code.”
