Call me a curious creature. I truly believe knowledge is power. That’s why I love what I do so much and so excited to partner with Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany on their latest initiatives.. So let’s get to what they are working on.

SMART ANTENNAS

Soon the entire world will be connected to the Internet through satellites. Providing cars, airplanes and households with easy access to the online world, from any location will require a new generation of smart antennas. With its liquid crystal technology, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany is making an important contribution to the development of these antennas. This will be the new level of connectivity enabling steady connection to a satellite without any mechanical parts.

The advantages of smart antennas: They are able to receive large quantities of data almost anywhere in the world, their signal quality is superior and they are better protected against hacking.

Because of their higher data speed and efficiency in transmitting signals, smart antennas also play an important role in the optimization of the 5G network. This makes them a key technology for the Internet of Things, smart cities or the future of mobility.

SUSTAINABILITY

THIS year we are all doing our part to be better- better to ourselves, better to others, but also to the world we live in and what we leave behind. Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany is doing the same. A meaningful contribution to climate action requires a holistic approach. They are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, and want to be climate neutral in 2040.

“SMASH Packaging”

Plastic is pathetic. FACT.

Did you know that the average plastic bag is only used for 12 minutes before being discarded… And 1 MILLION are used every single minute around the world.

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany is working to find new ways of making their products and packaging more environmentally sustainable (while still getting them to customers in a safe and timely manner.)

It’s called “SMASH Packaging”

Instead of boxes with protective bubble-wrap plastic bags for one or two small vials of product, they have developed new, padded envelope-based packaging that further reduces the environmental footprint of the packaging. Based on projections, they could reduce our climate impact by 75,000 kg of CO2 by 2025 – or the equivalent of taking 16 cars off the road for a full year. Just by reducing the packaging. Plastic is over.

How does it help to be more sustainable?

Through SMASH, they’re collaborating with vendors and customers to find solutions that minimize packaging requirements, increase reliance on sustainable materials, and maximize recycling – all the while adhering to performance and regulatory requirements.

Thanks to their SMASH Packaging initiative, they’ve already achieved improvements that will reduce over 100 metric tons of corrugated and plastic packaging annually.
