Don't Call Waymo From The Bar
If you’ve been drinking, never get into a Waymo (or any self-driving car). Here’s why…
It might sound wild, but you can actually get a DUI in a self-driving car.
Yup — even though you’re not the one behind the wheel.
The Legal Catch
In most states — including California — the law still considers you responsible for the vehicle, even if it’s driving itself. That means if you’re under the influence while using autonomous mode, you could still be charged with a DUI.
It doesn’t matter if it’s Waymo, Tesla Autopilot, or Cruise ,if the tech fails or something goes wrong, the law technically says it’s on you, not the car. It’s unlikely you’ll be charged, but better safe then sorry?
The Bottom Line
Until laws catch up with technology, the safest move is still the classic one: call an Uber or Lyft instead.
Smart tech doesn’t always mean safe tech — especially when it comes to legal gray areas.
