Everything You Need to Know about the New iPhones (more than it's going to co$t you)

The new slew of iPhones are coming. Yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook and his crew unveiled a lot of new members to the iFam. And let's just confirm, the iPhone X is dead. In its place, we now have three new options: the iPhone XS (pronounced “ten s”), iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR (pronounced “ten r”).

You're probably wondering, how do I pick between the new confusing iPhones that have the hardest names to remember? Or how do I figure out which one might be the best device for me? We've put it all together, rounded up the info so you can make the right choice.

THE IPHONE XS, XS MAX, AND XR SHARE A LOT OF THE SAME FEATURES

The lineup includes the iPhone XS and XS Max—made with surgical-grade steel and a more durable glass—which are the priciest models, starting at $999 and $1099 respective. This time around, Apple is putting the same core hardware into all of its 2018 iPhones. There are differences when it comes to screen size, battery capacity, and camera, but they are all similar.

The home button is gone, so you'll use Face ID like you do on the X and, now, Xs and Xs Max. The camera got a big upgrade, with red eye reduction technology and a better portrait mode. Your selfies will never be the same. The new devices will also help you get real with your screen addiction, by tracking how much time you spend on it through something called “Screen Time” (don’t worry, you can turn this off if you’re in denial). And because you and everyone you went to college with may want to throw your own digital class reunion—you’ll now be able to talk to up to 32 people on Facetime.

iPhone Xs

Details: The rumors were true, the iPhone Xs is Apple’s new flagship smartphone, meaning it’s the new poster child. This new phone  comes in a stunning new gold finish as well as silver and space grey. The 5.8-inch super retina display has greater dynamic range, meaning you’ll see more colors in the photos you take and videos you stream. Also, edge-to-edge OLED display, so more screen, a dual-lens camera system with both wide and telephoto optics, and Apple’s latest and greatest A12 Bionic processor (it will be fast).

Plus, this phone promises water-resistance in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes,

There's a much-needed battery boost, too: You'll get 30 minutes more battery life on the iPhone Xs, and an hour and a half more on the iPhone Xs Max than on the iPhone X.

But the iPhone Xs isn’t cheap, starting at $999 and going as high as $1,349 for the version with a 512GB of onboard storage.

iPhone Xs Max

Summary: This iPhone Xs, measures up at a monstrous 6.5 inches. It;s big! So big that it probably wont fit your pocket and tiny purse. With this kind of screen size, in combination with the OLED display, this is a good fit for thiose who want to use their iPhone to watch a lot of TV shows or movies, or do a ton of photography or videography. Maybe even leave their laptop at home, and work mobile.

It starts at $999, which is in line with last year's iPhone X pricing, and goes all the way up to $1,449 for the 512GB version, a price point that rivals that of Apple’s high-end MacBook Pro laptops.

Reason to Buy: If you already have an iPhone X, there's very little reason to upgrade to the Xs. But if you want the latest-and-greatest tech, with a humongous screen, this phone is for you. 

iPhone Xr

Summary:  For those who don’t feel like spending a G, there’s a slightly less expensive iPhone XR, starting at $749. By no means is it “cheap,” - but it’s certainly the most affordable of Apple’s newest iPhone options.There's still an edge-to-edge display (6.1-inch), this time LCD display instead of the more high-end OLED version (which isn't as bright or colorful as the OLEDs)  on its fancier counterpart. The phone is water resistance (but not as water-resistant as the iPhone Xs or iPhone Xs Max).The iPhone Xr comes in fun colors, including, blue, coral, red, and yellow, in addition to white and black.

So how about the camera? The iPhone Xr only has one camera, and only uses a single lens, limiting its photographic capabilities, and lacks the additional (second lens) 12 megapixel wide-angle camera that's in the Xs and Xs Max.

You'll get an hour and a half more battery life on the Xr than you did on the iPhone 8 Plus.

Reason to Buy: Of the three new phones, this is the iPhone I would recommend to most people. You are getting the most bang for your buck -- especially because the iPhone Xr uses the same A12 Bionic processor found in the more expensive phones, so you’re not sacrificing anything in terms of under-the-hood specs.

Unless you’re an avid photographer, who who wants the top-of-the-line gear, the iPhone Xr camera will be totally fine for everyday use.
