Look Ma, no hands!

The California Public Utilities Commission just gave the green light to allow passengers in self-driving cars. The decision comes after three years of development at Aura, the “autonomous transportation” company officially installing its auto-pilot software into some California vans this year.

But don’t expect your Uber to arrive empty handed (sans the need for awkward small talk) anytime soon: For now, the only self-driving cars getting public test drives are in Arizona, where UPS is using them in a new delivery program. And even when Aura’s passenger cars get going, their new permit requires all self-driving vehicles to keep an actual human in the driver’s seat for safety reasons.
