#WCW: Women to Watch

This week's #womancrushwednesday is women in media - whether you're watching them perform or what they directed, you're watching strong work from strong women.

These three women are creating content for us to be inspired by and giving back to the community at the same time. They are empowering us with narratives not widely spread and helping everyone see themselves in the media we watch.

1. Lilly Singh - iiSuperwomanii

Lilly Singh, known to most as iiSuperwomanii, is such force to be reckoned with - we couldn’t fit it all in one blog. She felt that her life wasn’t headed in the direction right for her and turned to youtube to build her brand. Not only is she a hilarious creator but an outspoken advocate for equality. She launched #GirlLove which encourages woman to compliment and openly admire each other, and uses her birthday to partner with the charity Me to We.

She is truly a superwoman in every sense of the word.

2. Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, film marketer, and film distributer. DuVernay made history as the first African-American woman to win the U.S. Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. Additionally, in 2014, she went a step further as to become the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her film, Selma. In 2017, she went on to direct a documentary titled 13th which also became Oscar nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Her upcoming movie, A Wrinkle in Time, is already making headlines for being directed by a woman of color who is the first to have a $100 million budget for a live-action film. Watch out for next record breaking move.

3. Issa Rae

Issa Rae is an American actress, writer, director, producer, and web series vector. She literally does it all. She was discovered by her web series on Youtube titled Awkward Black Girl. She is now a co-creator, co-writer, and a star in HBO’s Insecure, for which she has received two Golden Globe nominations. Rae continues to explore her creativity by expanding her Youtube to include other people of color and by continuously working on new content for future TV shows.
