Hack: How LinkedIn has helped my career

To get to where I wanted to be, I always knew I had to find the right people to get there. They say it's all about who you know, but where do you find them?

Flashback to 2015, after many weeks of looking for a certain media exec to pitch my idea of an on-air tech segment.. I looked for emails, social media, made phone calls... I was unsuccessful.

It wasn't until I used LinkedIn, that I successfully got to this person directly. I realized shortly after, that LinkedIn is very
different from an email or normal cold messaging. That media exec put me in touch with his talent staff which later led to my very first major on air media segment.

Since then, I have been updating my LinkedIn to make sure it’s current and on brand. I post updates about what I'm up to almost every day, and I spend Sundays reaching out to my people in my network and new people who I want in my network.

Your network is your net worth. How many times have you heard this?

It's true! Every one of us has our own motivations, our own inspiration, and our own ideas of what success means — or something we’re “In It” for. For some, it's a way to give back; for others, a much more pragmatic desire to provide. For me it's a sense of purpose and a deep passion. It's all about community.

Regardless of the motivation or reason, no one has to go it alone. Whatever you’re in it for, there is a community of people to help, support, inspire and push you. That's why networks are so important to achieve your own definition of success. I found my network and passion for women in tech on LinkedIn.
