Is TikTok Getting Banned in the U.S.?
A ban on TikTok?
Trump said he might ban TikTok. As we know, the United States government and the Chinese government do not have the best relationship at the moment.
The fear is that the data collected from the app could end up in the hands of the Chinese government. This wouldn’t be the first time Trump has accused China of stealing intellectual property from the US. And this is his administration's way of putting a stop to it. Under 2017 Chinese intelligence law, Chinese companies have to turn over user data to the Chinese government.
Fact: TikTok collects user location and meta data so that raises real concerns that the Chinese government could access user data. The bottom line is that TikTok, although it has become extremely popular in the US, it is not secure. This is obviously a very bold action from the President, but Tik Tok is a Chinese owned company— key here !
In a statement, a TikTok spokeswoman noted that it stores its data in the United States and has “strict controls on employee access” to the information.
In an op-ed published Monday, state-run Chinese tabloid the Global Times, accused the United States of “killing China’s most competitive companies” by threatening to ban TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, out of “cowardice” because it sees it as a threat to other American technology companies.
