How much screen time should my kids get?

The American Academy of Pediatrics website spells it out for you: No screen time for kids under about two, no more than an hour a day for kids between two and five. Kids should have limits and “high quality” media, and you should make a habit of watching videos / playing games with them.

I know it’s hard! ScreenS are everywhere, from the taxi to our pockets and even at restaurants. Heyy, I even use a screen to find and follow recipes. The best way to limit screen time is to set up expectations for you and for your significant other, plus baby.

Growing data suggests that exposing young children to too much time in front of a TV or computer can have negative effects on their development, including issues with memory, attention and language skills.

In the latest look at the topic, researchers report in JAMA Pediatrics that more screen time is linked to poorer progress on key developmental measures such as communication skills, problem solving and social interactions among young kids over time.

Recommendations:

Children under 18 months should have no screen use other than video chatting

18 to 24 months, watch together in moderation

2 to 5 years, limit screen time to one hour per day of high-quality programming

6 and up, place consistent limits and make sure the screen time doesn't interfere with adequate sleep and physical activity.
