The iPhone 13 is here, should you get it?

Finally the the iPhone 13 is here and it’s here serving looks with not one, not two, but four new iPhones — iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max. Faster chips, better cameras, better battery life, a 20% smaller notch. BUTTT it’s pricey. Should you get it?

I think the question is a bit more nuanced than a simple yes or no. If you already have an iPhone 11 or newer, you’ll get most of the cool new software features once you update your phone to iOS 15.

However, there are some hardware upgrades that make this a compelling option.

Camera

As a content creator the main thing I’m paying attention during the yearly iPhone keynote is the improvements to the camera. Compared to the iPhone 4, which was my first iPhone, this camera is absolutely mind blowing!

3 Main Improvements

  • Bigger Sensors

    • Physical size increased in all three cameras- which means Much Better performance in low light

    • Overall improved photo quality

      • Biggest difference seems to be in the Wide Angle lens

  • Macro Photography

    • Previously to accomplish this you needed to attach a 3rd party lens

      • These would get lost / scratched up super easy

    • The quality of the photos is really good considering how small your camera is. It’s still not as good as a professional setup. But even for professional photographers this is still a useful tool because your phone is always on you, and you never know when inspiration will strike.

  • Cinematic Mode

Here are some quick tips to get the most out of cinematic mode!

  • Use a tripod or stabilizer of some kind

    • Cinematic mode doesn’t look as good when you’re shooting hand held or your subject is moving around quickly

  • You have to think about how you’re going to compose your shot ahead of time to get the most out of this feature.

  • Try to make sure you always have dynamic backgrounds - no one single color backgrounds

  • Also having multiple people in the scene will definitely help make the effect more notable.

Using the iPhone as a Mommy

I have the iPhone 12, 11 Pro max and now the 13 Pro max.

I used to love the bigger screens, - it’s way better for reading and consuming content.  BUT now I kinda find the size a bit unwieldy. As a mommy, I always need to make sure my phone has a strong case on it, in case Jordan (or I) drops the phone.

The 13 Pro Max with a case on, definitely isn’t fitting inside your pocket.

I decided to go with the 13 pro max because it has the best camera and biggest battery.

My dream phone would be one that has the better camera system of the 13 pro max, inside the body of an iPhone Mini.

A lot of jobs, not just content creators, benefit from having a high quality camera easily that's easily accessible

  • Lawyers can use them to scan files

  • Doctors and Dentist can use them for telemedicine

Having a camera this easily accessible has improved the lives of so many different people. It’s inspiring to see all these creative tools made accessible to more and more people.
