Women of Color in Tech, Part 3

Let’s face it, the Tech Industry along with many other job markets continue to fall behind when it comes to hiring women. Although the U.S has had a 47% increase of women in the job market, big name companies such as Amazon, Google, and Apple only have a workforce of 34.4% women. This needs to change.

I bet you didn’t know that often times women in STEM jobs have experienced some discrimination in the hiring process. Often times, Black and Hispanic women who go to school to study computer science or engineering are less likely to get hired in a Tech Role then other races.

It is also unfortunate to admit that there has only been a 2% increase in women software engineers over the last 20 years.

So what can we do to break this trend?

  1. Give credit when it is due: Most women of color often feel invisible and managers and supervisors are quick to forget the achievements of these women. In order to build a stronger and overall better society we need to call out instances where we see or feel that someone is not receiving the credit they deserve.

  2. Diversify the Workplace: The Tech world is growing at a rapid pace, even more now than ever and often times diversifying the workplace can get overlooked when hiring. Most companies rush to find their ideal candidate and overlook background, culture, and gender.

  3. Hire someone based on potential not background: Women are often overlooked for entry level jobs and therefore won’t gain the experience as much as others. Hiring based on passion, hard work, and drive should be some of the key components when looking to hire.

With that being said, we are highlighting some BOSS Women in Tech who have made a profound imprint in our society. For all women in STEM lets support, acknowledge, and enlighten one another.
